Volcanologist OP Returns to the Perse

Volcanologist OP Returns to the Perse 18 June 2010

Old Persean Mel Rodgers (1999) took time out of a brief but busy return to the UK to visit the Upper School on Monday 14th June, where she gave a presentation to Year 7 pupils about the fascinating subject of volcanology.

During her presentation, Mel talked to the students about how volcanoes work, and was very impressed with their depth of knowledge as they have not yet studied volcanoes at the Perse. Mel then went on to describe the work that she does on one particular volcano called the 'Telica Volcano' in Nicaragua, Central America.

Mel discussed with the pupils about how many people choose to live close to Telica even though it can be dangerous, as the land surrounding the volcano is very fertile and ideal for growing crops and keeping livestock on.

After the main presentation ended, Mel received many interesting questions from the students who will soon be studying plate tectonics when they start Year 8.
